Michael Walpole appointed to head Taxation and Business Law

Professor Michael Walpole has been appointed as head of the School of Taxation and Business Law at UNSW Business School.

Business School Senior Deputy Dean, Leisa Sargent described Professor Walpole as “a committed researcher and teacher/communicator in tax law”.

He is also a tax writer and presenter with numerous academic and professional publications in books, and in journals such as Australian Tax Forum (Editor), Australian Tax Review (former co-editor) and British Tax Review. He has been a keynote speaker at several OECD fora and an invited presenter at Taxation Institute National events.

Professor Walpole is also an active contributor to the profession and the tax debate via involvement in the Tax Institute Professional Development Committee, Technical Committee, Tax Practitioners’ Board meetings; and the NSW Law Society Specialist Accreditation Committee. He is an International Research Fellow at the Oxford University Centre for Business Tax and was recently appointed to the Australian Taxation Office GST Stewardship Committee.

Prior to entering academia, Professor Walpole was a tax consultant and legal practitioner (solicitor and barrister).

Professor Sargent thanked former Head of School Professor John Taylor, for his “sustained and very significant leadership of the School of Tax and Business Law.”

Being a Head of School is a very rewarding role but it is also be very challenging from time to time: managing students and staff as well as many other stakeholders within and beyond the University can take a herculean effort.
