Belle magazine, Bauer Media’s most popular homes magazine, has announced the winner of this year’s $10,000 Belle ArtStart competition as UNSW Art & Design graduate, Henry Curchod, for his artwork Land More Bright than Sky.

The Belle ArtStart prize aims to unearth some of Australia’s most talented yet unrepresented artists. Now in its second year, Belle ArtStart accepts entrants aged 16 to 25 and stipulates that winners must be willing to sell their work at the opening event. In addition, all submissions must be painted on the same size canvas.

American-born Curchod is now a Sydney-based artist whose work explores colour, abstraction, sexuality, and cultural taboos. His most recent exhibition, Tonkotsu Method, held at China Heights Gallery in 2016, was dedicated to the affect of light on water. He was selected for exhibition in the Sulman Art Prize, the Mosman Art Prize, and the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing in 2014.

The Belle ArtStart competition is sponsored by Belle Property, Peroni, and Kerry Armstrong Art.
