A UNSW Business School team have won the National Finals of the 2017 UBS Investment Banking Challenge. It is the first time students representing the Business School have won the prestigious competition.

The team, Alliance Advisory, consisted of Kyla Tam (Commerce/Law), Muzammil Rajwani (Commerce/Engineering) and Vikas Sharma (Commerce/Engineering). They fought off tough competition from over 400 teams nationwide and were awarded $5,000 1st place cash prize along with interviews for summer internships with UBS.

Seven universities nationwide made it through to the National Finals (USYD, Monash, UMelb, UniSA, UQ, UWA and UNSW). The teams were required to advise a board of directors on the merits of a merger and acquisition transaction. The 2017 case study revolved around the $12 billion takeover of Asciano by a Qube and Brookfield led consortium.

The Finals were conducted at the UBS Sydney Office, and teams presented their recommendations to a panel of senior UBS investment bankers. The judges looked at a number of criteria including: understanding of the strategic rationale for the transaction and other issues surrounding the transaction, including any regulatory concerns, and clarity and conviction about the final recommendations.
