UNSW Business School’s Professor Roger Simnett awarded Order of Australia

Professor Roger Simnett has been awarded an Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for “distinguished service to the accountancy profession, to business education, to the development of national and international auditing and assurance standards, to accounting organisations, and to research.”

He said he was “humbled and delighted to have received such an honour”.

Professor Simnett is a Scientia Professor of Accounting at UNSW Sydney Business School, Australia and the current Chair and CEO of the Australian Auditing and Assurance Standards Board.

He added he “very much appreciated the support of all the staff in the School of Accounting, and the Business School at UNSW Sydney, who have supported me over the past 25 years, especially with respect to my work and travel associated with national and international committees.”

Professor Simnett was previously the Associate Dean of Research for the Australian School of Business from 2011-2014 and Head of the School of Accounting from 2006-2010. Roger's research interests cover a range of international auditing/assurance issues, aimed at improving audit/assurance quality and making policy recommendations, and his work covers both auditor decision-making and the economics of auditing and well as examining credibility-enhancing mechanisms for non-financial information.

He is recognised as a leading academic in auditing and his work has appeared in the leading academic and professional journals, including The Accounting Review, Accounting, Organizations and Society, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, Abacus, Behavioral Research in Auditing and Contemporary Accounting Research.

He is also currently serving on the editorial boards of a number of journals, including the main three specialist auditing journals: Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, International Journal of Auditing and Managerial Auditing Journal. Roger is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

Also recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours was Michael Crouch AO, who has been awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia for his eminent service to the community through philanthropic contributions to youth, cultural, medical research and health care organisations. Michael Crouch AO is Founder and former Executive Chairman (1962-2013) of Zip Industries Pty Ltd, which pioneered the design and manufacture of instant boiling water and filtered drinking water appliances, he established the UNSW Sydney Michael Crouch Innovation Centre.

Additionally Chris Cuffe has been awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia for “distinguished service to the community as an advocate for philanthropy, as a supporter of improved financial efficiencies in charitable organisation and to the funds management industry”. Mr Cuffe holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the UNSW Business School.
