On Thursday 17 August, the UNSW Law Careers team hosted its inaugural 'Get Connected’ meet-and-greet at NIDA.

Some 200 law students had the opportunity to speak to employers from five industry groups – corporate, financial services, government, consulting and legal. In addition to a number of law firms, employers included Boral, Commonwealth Bank, the Australian Human Rights Commission, McKinsey & Co and the Crown Solicitor’s Office, to name a few.

In responding to the changing demands of students and employers alike, Joanne Glanz, Manager of the UNSW Law Careers Service explains, ‘Now, more than ever, employers are placing an emphasis on transferrable skills such as critical thinking, resilience and commerciality. Meanwhile, an increasing number of law graduates are looking for career options. The aim of ‘Get Connected’ was to open our students’ minds to the breadth of employment opportunities and career paths - both in traditional legal practice and beyond.’

Irene McBride, a fifth Arts/Law student said that Get Connected “…was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about a wide range of career options…Being able to meet employees in many positions from HR Recruitment, to paralegals, to department heads was such a valuable learning experience, and it really boosted my confidence about my future after law school.”

After the success of this year’s ‘Get Connected’, the UNSW Law Careers team looks forward to hosting an even larger event next year.
