Girls are about to shine in Australia's first girls' maths olympiad team! They will compete in the upcoming European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), Florence, Italy, on 9 - 15 April 2018. The Australian Mathematics Trust has appointed Ms Thanom Shaw (pictured) as Team Leader and Ms Michelle Chen as Deputy Team Leader.

Thanom ShawMs Shaw, a recent and excellent Visiting Teaching Fellow here at the School of Mathematics and Statistics, UNSW Sydney, has deep experience with training talented maths students. For more than a decade, she has taught maths at Sydney's SCEGGS Darlinghurst school, and she has assisted and tutored at the National Mathematics Summer School since 2002.

'Finding, promoting and supporting opportunities for girls to engage with and excel in mathematics has always been a passion of mine. EGMO, along with Mathematical and Informatics Olympiads and many enrichment activities like the Olympiad training schools, provide such unique and special experiences for students to push the boundaries of their potential. I'm really looking forward to selecting, training and supporting the team in their first ever go at the competition,' said Ms Shaw.

Ms Chen also brings great experience to the team; she competed as an Australian team member in the 2016 International Mathematical Olympiad where she received a Bronze medal. She currently runs mathematics enrichment classes at Methodist Ladies' College and Presbyterian Ladies' College in Melbourne.

Congratulations to Ms Shaw and Ms Chen, and go Team!
