Following an extensive international search, Scientia Professor Nigel Lovell has been appointed the new Head of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering. Professor Lovell has worked in biomedical engineering for almost four decades, and is a UNSW alumnus himself.
“Professor Lovell has a stellar research track record and has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the discipline over recent years,” said Professor Mark Hoffman, UNSW Dean of Engineering.
“He will be responsible for overseeing the School as it moves into an era of rapid change and unprecedented opportunity,” Professor Hoffman said.
Professor Lovell has simultaneously been appointed as the inaugural Director of the Institute of Health Engineering.
The Institute of Health Engineering is being developed together with the Faculty of Medicine School to address the significant research and commercialisation challenges and opportunities which exist at the interface of engineering and clinical medicine. The Institute will exploit UNSW’s existing leadership in Biomedical Engineering created through the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering and across many other parts of UNSW Engineering and the University.
Professor Lovell is currently President (2017-2018) of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS), which is the world's largest member-based biomedical engineering professional organization. He has recently also been Acting Head of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering.
