Leading Australian experts in market design and health economics from UNSW Sydney have been elected as Fellows of the prestigious Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.

In the 2018 list, Professor Jacob Goeree and Professor Denise Doiron were named as new Fellows, and are among 4 from UNSW, and 36 named Australia-wide.

Professor Doiron is a leading economist, well-known for her work in labour, social policy and currently health economics. This is evidenced by her publications in the top journals in her area - Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Econometrics - and top general interest journals - Review of Economics and Statistics, International Economic Review - as well as her invitations to advise other organizations and to mentor junior researchers.

She has held appointments at the University of Western Ontario, the University of British Columbia, the University of Sydney and visiting appointments at Boston University, University of Washington and the Australian National University. Her work on risk management in health insurance and training in nursing has attracted more than a million dollars in research funding.

Professor Doiron served as co-editor of the Economic Record (Australia's flagship journal in Economics), external member of HILDA's external reference group, and as a Head of School of Economics at UNSW Business School. She was the first economist to give the Fay Gale Lectures, a series of public lectures across Australia hosted by the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.

Professor Goeree, Scientia Professor and Director of the AGORA Centre for Market Design, is a world-leading experimenter, theorist and market designer.

He has published in top general interest journals in economics, computer science and political science, including Econometrica, American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy and American Political Science Review, as well as in Nature and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.  He has also produced two highly-praised books: Quantal Response Equilibrium (with Holt and Palfrey), published by Princeton University Press (2016) and the Handbook of Spectrum Auction Design (co-edited with Bichler), published by Cambridge University Press (2017).

Professor Goeree's research has influenced the design of major spectrum auctions worldwide. More recently, he received the EURO Prize for the design of a combinatorial exchange to reform the NSW Fishing industry.  In light of his ground-breaking research contributions, Professor Goeree was elected Fellow of the Econometric Society (2012), Fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (2014), Fellow of the Royal Netherlands Society for the Sciences (2015), and now Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

"The scholars elected here to Fellowship have each made contributions of excellence, as recognised by their peers in an exhaustive electoral process," said Academy President, Professor Glenn Withers AO.

This year 19 women and 17 men were elected as Fellows.

The New Fellows of the Academy will be formally welcomed and inducted at the Academy's General Meeting and Annual Symposium to be held in Canberra from 12-14 November 2018.
