Our seventh annual Advanced Mathematics Day was held in the Scientia Galleries last Friday 5 October.

After a welcome and overview from Professor Bruce Henry, first and second year students were given advice on choosing their major during presentations by Catherine Greenhill, Scott Sisson, Josef Dick and Honours student Melinda Mortimer. MathSoc, StatSoc and DataSoc representatives Yifan Shen, Michael Lloyd and Jacky Koh spoke briefly about their societies and encouraged the attending students to get involved.

Following morning tea, our special Honours info session kicked off with the presentation of the School's 2019 Honours Scholarship to Brittany Evat. We award two of these scholarships per year, one each to a female and male pre-Honours student who have achieved outstanding results in the preceding semester. Ray Li, who also received this year's scholarship, is currently overseas on exchange.

Applied Honours Coordinator Chris Angstmann gave an overview of the Honours year, and was followed by a panel discussion with current and former Honours students Gina ChoutisGary Liang, Melinda Mortimer and Chris Rock fielding questions from the audience.

Three-minute flash Honours project talks were presented by Jan Zika, Gordana Popovic, Vera Roshchina, David Khoury (Kirby Institute), Mircea Voineagu, David Warton, Pinhas Grossman and Adelle Coster.

Following lunch, Honours, Masters and PhD students attended presentations by our alumni Dr Bernard Kachoyan (Head of Maritime Requirements Analysis, Maritime Operations Research at Defence Science and Technology) and Gina Choutis (Managing Business Consultant for Accenture), who were followed by talks by School members Lee Zhao, Galina Levitina and David Warton.

Once the day was wrapped up, students and staff enjoyed drinks in the Galleries.
