A message of congratulations to Professor Claire Annesley, Dean UNSW Arts, Architecture & Design (working title), as she was named one of 73 leading UK social scientists to have been conferred the award of Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences last week.

Fellows are nominated for their outstanding contributions to research, and their application of social science to policy, education, society and the economy.

Along with Claire’s international research collaborators with whom she wrote Cabinets, Ministers and Gender, published by Oxford University Press last year. Claire joins the Academy’s Fellowship of distinguished individuals from academic, public and private sectors, across the full breadth of the social sciences. Through leadership, applied research, policy making and practice, Claire’s work has helped address and deepen understanding of some of the toughest challenges facing our society and the world.

At a time when Social Sciences, Arts, Creative Arts and Humanities come under increasing pressure, Claire and her fellow leading social scientists are testament to the importance of social sciences in developing and nurturing critical thinkers to solve global problems.

Last month, The Australian named UNSW the national institutional leader in Social Sciences (and Social Work) in its research special report. I know that Claire feels very privileged and honoured to be part of such an impressive and strong cohort of academics whose work and passion continue to place UNSW at the forefront of social sciences research. With her leadership I have no doubt that we will go from strength to strength.

Join us in wishing Claire a very warm congratulations on her award.
