Professor Shirley Scott, Professor of International Law and International Relations and Head of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences at UNSW Canberra has recently been elected President of the Asian Society of International Law.
Professor Shirley Scott, Professor of International Law and International Relations and Head of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences at UNSW Canberra has recently been elected President of the Asian Society of International Law. She is the first Australian to serve in this role.
Professor Scott has played a key role in the development of the Society and its journal, The Asian Journal of International Law since the Society’s inception, having served on its Executive Council, as Director of Research and on the Society’s distinguished Advisory Committee. Professor Scott has an international reputation as a leading international scholar on the politics of international law.
Professor Scott is joined on the Society’s Executive Council by Professor Andrew Byrnes of UNSW’s Faculty of Law, who has been elected one of the Society’s Vice-Presidents. A well-known leading international human rights scholar, he has previously served as the President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law.
The Asian Society of International Law was established in 2007 to promote awareness of and respect for international law in Asia.
The Society is an important forum for exchanging views on international legal issues, including with other regional legal organisations. The Society has held major conference in Singapore, China, Japan, India, South Korea and the Philippines.
Australia will host the Society’s next flagship conference, to be held in 2021 in Canberra with UNSW Canberra as one of its primary sponsors. The theme of the conference is: ‘What place for international law in the Asian Future?’
The Conference is an opportunity for Australia to elevate the profile of international law and promote its contemporary relevance for Asia, as well as underlining the commitment of Australia’s international law community to engaging in second track dialogues and networking within the region.
UNSW’s role in hosting the Biennial Conference reflects the University’s strengths in international law.
