The launch of the Intercollege Cup was a great success, with Goldstein Alligators winning the first round of competition.
Friday 6 March saw the launch of UNSW’s tri-annual Inter-college Cup at the Alumni Lawn – the home of sport on campus. Despite the week being rained out, the sun came out for an afternoon of healthy competition and team spirit.
Eight colleges competed in round robin games of oztag, ultimate frisbee and table tennis, each showing off their new uniform and mascots. The highly anticipated mystery event was a 3-legged relay race which brought out the teams’ drive to win and to bring home bragging rights for their college.
College pride was not at all lacking with Hall making their own flags and many others coming along with chants and war cries. It was fantastic to see Warrane and Creston coming together to form the Warcrest Panthers, with the event cementing friendships and team comradery.
Lorna Arkell, Coordinator of the Cup commented on the success of the event:
"The Inter-college Cup showcased the best parts of the inter-residential community and college pride. All afternoon, chants and cheers could be heard across Alumni Lawn as college supporters cheered on their athletes to victory. The Goldstein Alligators may have taken out the Term 1 event, but the other colleges are certainly looking to knock them off top spot in Term 2 and 3!"
Points were awarded from the round robin games, the novelty event and spirit points with the Goldstein Alligators closely followed by the New College Wolves and Baxter Bears. No doubt that the college teams will continue to bring the energy and enthusiasm for the next round of competition.
