CVEN First Year Camp returns for 2021!
CEVSOC’s community building amongst first and second-year students was a great success.
CEVSOC’s community building amongst first and second-year students was a great success.
On 14 May 2021 almost one hundred of our students set off for Camp Morisset in the beautiful Lake Macquarie region of the NSW North Coast, for a weekend of fun, thrills, learning and connecting at CEVSOC’s legendary First (and Second) year Camp.
22 student leaders, 6 CEVSOC co-ordinators, 2 photographers, 66 first and second year campers had a thrilling weekend with major activities including a Scavenger Hunt, Engineering Challenges - Building a raft, water filtration, UNSW Trivia and Living Libraries.
There was a costume themed party - Land Ahoy! on the Friday night and a Saturday night dance party – entitled Neon Glow! Where students were encouraged to iIlluminate the night. “Whether that be high-vis vests, 1980’s spandex and leg warmers, or plain white t-shirts, you’re bound to have something in your closet. Dance the night away wearing bright coloured tutu’s, funky glasses, or even glow in the dark body paint.”
Organised this year by CEVSOC stalwarts Jennifer Hou and Ilma Khan (Camp Coordinators), Alexander Vostermans and Christine Ha (Night Coordinators), Vanessa Ngyugen and Ernest Yee (Day Coordinators), the camp aims to support and encourage first and second year civil, environmental, surveying, and flexible first year students as they transition into university life.
Connections between real people in real space has become even more necessary in the Covid-disrupted landscape. CEVSOC’s aim at the camp was to help our students build friendships and connections, through fast-paced engineering team bonding challenges and activities, as well giving them an insight into the work and uni life ahead of them by answering all their uni and industry related questions!
For the organisers, the highlight was being able to see strong friendships form over the course of 3 days amongst first and second years through activities and challenges such as our scavenger hunt.
They also appreciated the visit of the Head of School attending camp and delivering a motivating and informative welcoming speech.
CEVSOC would like to thank the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering for its financial and moral support –“ a huge thank you to CVEN Business Manager Anthony Dever by assisting us throughout the budgeting process.”
