The Westpac Scholars Trust will award up to $4.7 million in scholarships in 2022 to a group of outstanding Australians who are determined to find creative new ways to solve problems facing our communities.
UNSW Medicine & Health Master of Public Health candidate Elizabeth Wong has been named one of the recipients of the 2022 Westpac Future Leaders Scholars.
Elizabeth Wong is a motivated junior doctor, with a vision for health equity for all Australians, especially those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and rural populations. “By pursuing a Masters of Public Health at UNSW Sydney, I hope to drive systematic transformation as a community leader, collaborator, health advocate and mentor,” says Elizabeth.
Elizabeth is one of 17 ambitious young individuals who will undertake postgraduate study with the help of a Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship. Valued at up to $120,000, the scholarship will enable Masters and PhD students to pursue their research, as well as connect them to a network of individuals who are united by their generosity of spirit and courage to act today for a better tomorrow.
“As the nation seeks to build a sustainable and inclusive future, Australia is looking to a new generation of leaders. As well as the financial support, a key part of the Westpac Scholars program is for each scholarship recipient to undertake a transformative leadership development program to equip them with the skills, networks and opportunities they need to reach their potential,” says Amy Lyden, Acting CEO Westpac Scholars Trust.
Scholar Recipients also become lifelong members of the program’s alumni, the Westpac 100 Scholars Network. To Elizabeth, this is pivotal. "The power of the alumni network reflects a community of committed lifelong learners, with mentoring and collaboration which will be invaluable in fostering my personal growth and resilience, and consequently, cultivate my drive to succeed."
Each year, in partnership with 14 universities across Australia, the Westpac Scholars Trust awards 100 scholarships a year to outstanding university students, researchers and social innovators to help them reach their potential and make a difference in Australia. Since 2016, the Trust has invested $31 million in more than 560 Westpac Scholars.
Growing by up to 100 Westpac Scholars every year, the W100 is a supportive scholar-led alumni community that values diversity and creates opportunities for collaboration, professional development, networking and contributing to positive change in Australia.
Applications for 2023 scholarships open in June. You can register your interest or nominate someone you know at westpac.com.au/scholarships.
