Congratulations to CIES Scientia Professor of Structural Engineering Brian Uy who has been elected Vice President of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) for a 4-year term (2023-2027). He is the first Australian to serve in this capacity.
The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) is a scientific / technical Association comprising members in 100 countries and counting 58 National Groups worldwide. Founded in 1929 it has its seat in Zurich, Switzerland. The President of IABSE (2022-2025) is Tina Vejrum, Denmark.
Prof Uy has been the Chair of the Australian National Group of the IABSE since 2015. The aim of the Association is to exchange knowledge and to advance the practice of structural engineering worldwide in the service of the profession and society.
IABSE deals with all aspects of structural engineering: the science and art of planning, design, construction, operation, monitoring and inspection, maintenance, rehabilitation and preservation, demolition and dismantling of structures, taking into consideration technical, economic, environmental, aesthetic and social aspects. The term 'Structures' includes bridges, buildings and all types of civil engineering structures, composed of any structural material.
Brian is also the Vice-President (Australasia and South-east Asia) of The Institution of Structural Engineers. He is Chairman of the Standards Australia Committee BD32 on Composite Structures and BD90-Part 6 on Bridge Structures which have developed standards on Steel and Composite Structures for buildings and bridges respectively. He also serves on BD01 and BD02 for Steel and Concrete Structures respectively.
Brian and his team’s research has been highly cited in the area of steel-concrete composite structures, steel structures, structural engineering and civil engineering where he is in the top 5% cited of all researchers in all these fields. Brian has delivered over 350 conference papers in 35 countries on 6 continents, including over 100 plenary/keynote/invited lectures in 25 countries and 6 continents and has been involved in research in steel and composite structures for over 30 years.
He has co-authored over 750 publications including over 250 journal articles with over 85% of these appearing in A* & A journals (Based on ERA 2010 ranking of the Australian Research Council). Much of this research that his team has been involved with has been underpinned by competitive grant funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC)and from industry totalling over $150 million Australian dollars.
Professor Uy has most recently been awarded over half a million dollars in an ARC Discovery Project Grant 2024 (DP240100489) for a research project, working with WSU’s Professor Zhong Tao, which aims to develop innovative clad steel-geopolymer concrete composite members that will significantly improve the safe and economical design and construction of civil engineering systems.
