UNSW celebrated their partnership with the Sydney Swans on Sunday with 330 students attending the round 20 matchup between the Swans and the Western Bulldogs at the Sydney Cricket Ground. This eagerly anticipated event, now in its third year, has become the hottest ticket in town for UNSW students, showcasing this wonderful partnership we have with the Sydney Swans.
Since the inception of this partnership, over 1300 students have had the opportunity to experience the high-energy atmosphere of an AFL game, many for the first time. This initiative has successfully bridged the gap between seasoned Swans fans and newcomers, fostering a shared passion for Australian sporting culture. It was also amazing to have Leah Hill (Pro-Vice Chancellor Student Success), Prof. Sarah Maddison (Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education & Student Experience), Prof. Merlin Crossley (Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Quality) and Prof. Vlado Perkovic (UNSW Provost) down with the students sharing this incredible experience.
The event was more than just a game; it was a cultural experience that brought together a diverse group of students, including a significant number of international attendees. For many, it was their first introduction to the unique spectacle of Australian Rules Football, offering a glimpse into a cherished aspect of Australian life.
As the Swans headed into Round 20 atop the ladder, they have their sights firmly set on the Minor Premiership. Their stellar performance this season had ignited the hopes of fans, with the Finals Series just around the corner however they were undone by the Bulldogs 87-48.
Adding to the excitement was the remarkable presence of nine UNSW students on the Swans' roster. Their journey from university athletes to AFL stars underscoring the importance of our elite athlete program we have on offer here.
The partnership between UNSW and the Sydney Swans extends beyond the men’s team. Later in the year, students will gather once again to support the Sydney Swans Women at Henson Park. With four of the players UNSW students this upcoming fixture promises to be another exciting event, providing students with more opportunities to engage with and support their peers.
An incredible afternoon, and although a bit chilly with those gusty winds howling around the SCG everyone who attended is already excited for the next event. A huge shoutout again to ArcSport for helping out with tickets, pre-match activities and getting the students to the ground safely. Stay tuned for how to get tickets to our AFLW matchup later in the year!
