On the 6 December, the UNSW Ageing Futures Institute in association with the Big Anxiety Research Centre hosted Why would I want that? Tea & Technology Café. The event provided a relaxed space to connect with researchers pioneering Artificial Intelligence [AI], virtual reality, robotics, immersive media and sound experiences, designed for older audiences.

This panel discussion was part of the event proceedings, and explored the idea of AI companions designed to support older people with life challenges including loneliness, anxiety, fears about falling and physical safety. Panel speakers included: Hon Sarah Kaine MLC, Chair of NSW Govt Inquiry into Loneliness Gwenda Darling, Palawa woman, member of the Aged Care Council of Elders Lynne Malcolm, former presenter, All in the Mind, ABC RN (host) Scientia Professor Jill Bennett, Director of UNSW AI-companion research program Tanya Petrovich, Business Development Manager, Dementia Australia.
