As part of the CVMM International Speaker Fellowship, world-renowned PAD researcher Prof Mary McDermott visited UNSW, engaging with faculty, early career researchers, and the Australian Cardiovascular Alliance (ACvA) National PAD Working Group. Her visit fostered new collaborations and strengthened international research ties.
Key Highlights
Prof McDermott valued the opportunity to meet faculty and early career researchers, exchange ideas, and discuss PAD research. “It was fascinating to learn about others’ work and discuss scientific investigations of PAD,” she said. She also enjoyed presenting her research and networking during meetings, lunches, and a reception. “The opportunity to engage in discussions about my work was rewarding and meaningful.”
Strengthening Global Collaborations
The visit reinforced research connections, including discussions with Prof Chris Askew and UNSW faculty on potential JAMA submissions.
“Meeting in person was invaluable for progressing our collaboration,” McDermott noted.
The visit also strengthened ties between the ACvA and the American Heart Association. “Combining efforts will greatly benefit those suffering from PAD,” said host A/Professor Belinda Parmenter who invited Prof McDermott.
Impact on the UNSW Community
Prof McDermott delivered two engaging presentations—one for early-career researchers and another for PAD-focused faculty—offering career insights and sharing her pioneering trials. “Her visit was a fantastic opportunity to connect and explore future research,” shared Belinda.
Looking Ahead
This visit significantly bolstered PAD research ties between Australia and the U.S. “We had a wonderful time hosting Prof McDermott and look forward to future collaborations,” said Belinda.
The CVMM International Speaker Fellowship continues to provide a valuable platform for global academic exchange, driving advancements in PAD research and treatment.
