We are pleased to announce the results of our CIES 2025 3 Minute Thesis Competition.  The 3MT format requires higher degree researchers to speak to the core of their years’ long and incredibly detailed research to communicate their work – its reasons, findings and uses – to the general public, yes in just three minutes.

Congratulations to all twenty-two of our higher degree research participants for their outstanding presentations and inspiring research.

🏆 Winners of the CIES 2025 3MT Competition:

1st Place: Tareq Khondoker – Topic title: ‘Low-carbon 3D printed concrete - for a sustainable tomorrow.’  Supervisor: Dr Ali Kashani
2nd Place: MD. Ibrahim Mostazid – ‘Cracking the code of green concrete cancer.’ Supervisors: A/Prof Ailar Hajimohammadi & Em Prof Stephen Foster
3rd Place: Gunja Shah – ‘Greener concrete from lithium waste: a new path to low-carbon construction.’ Supervisor: Dr Ali Kashani
4th Place: Mikael Gilbert –‘More than just bricks: the economics of Net Zero energy homes.’ Supervisors: Dr Khalegh Barati & A/Prof Johnson Shen

They will advance to represent CIES in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering Round on Friday, 6 June 2025. We wish them the very best!

N.B. Last year CIES PhD researcher Milad Mousavi was awarded first place for the 2024 Faculty of Engineering’s 3 Minute Thesis competition and came second in UNSW overall! Fingers crossed for 2025!
