UNSW Law & Justice is pleased to announce that Professor Sarah Williams has been appointed as the new Head of School of Global and Public Law, commencing in 2026.
Professor Williams is a globally recognised expert in international law, with expertise in international criminal law, international humanitarian law and disaster law. She is also Chair of the NSW International Humanitarian Law Committee for the Australian Red Cross. Her leadership and scholarship have shaped legal practice and policy both in Australia and internationally, and she brings a deep commitment to interdisciplinary research and public engagement.
Professor Williams will succeed Professor Theunis Roux, who has served as the inaugural Head of School since its establishment in 2021. Under his leadership, the School has flourished, fostering a vibrant academic community, expanding its global partnerships, and strengthening the Faculty’s reputation for excellence in public and international law. We thank Professor Roux for his outstanding contribution and vision in shaping the School’s foundation.
Professor Andrew Lynch, Dean of UNSW Law & Justice, welcomed the appointment:
“Sarah’s appointment reflects the Faculty’s commitment to leadership that is globally engaged, intellectually rigorous and highly collaborative. Her vision and expertise will be instrumental in advancing the goals of our Law & Justice 2030 Strategy, and I’m excited to see what she will achieve as she guides the School’s continued success and impact.”
Professor Williams reflected on the opportunity to step into the role:
“It is a privilege to take on this role and build on the outstanding leadership of Professor Roux. I look forward to working with colleagues across the School and Faculty to continue fostering a dynamic and inclusive academic environment, and to support research and teaching that makes a meaningful impact in Australia and globally.”
Please join us in congratulating Professor Sarah Williams on this exciting new chapter, and in thanking Professor Theunis Roux for his dedicated service and leadership.
