UNSW Law & Justice is proud to celebrate the election of Professor Jill Hunter and Professor Mimi Zou as Fellows of the Australian Academy of Law, recognising their leadership and contributions to the legal profession.

Fellowship is offered by invitation from the Academy’s Directors. It recognises individuals who have achieved exceptional distinction in the discipline of law and who actively support the Academy’s mission to advance legal scholarship and professional practice in Australia.

Professor Jill Hunter, from the School of Law, Society & Criminology, is known internationally for her work in evidence law, criminal procedure and jury research. Her scholarship has shaped how trial processes are understood, with a strong focus on fairness and the lived experience of legal actors.

"It’s a great honour to be elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law," says Professor Hunter. "I’m proud to contribute to its mission and to continue exploring how our legal systems can better reflect fairness, integrity and the experiences of those who engage with them."

Professor Mimi Zou, Head of the School of Private & Commercial Law, is a global expert in law and technology. Her research spans AI governance, blockchain regulation and innovation policy. Mimi has held senior academic roles across four continents and regularly advises governments and international organisations on responsible tech regulation. She was recently recognised with the Global Australian Award for Technology.

"I’m deeply honoured to join the Academy and to be recognised alongside so many distinguished colleagues," says Professor Zou. "Legal scholarship is evolving quickly in response to technological and societal change, and I look forward to contributing to the Academy’s work in shaping the future of law here and internationally."

Dean of UNSW Law & Justice, Professor Andrew Lynch, said the faculty is proud to celebrate this achievement.

"Jill and Mimi are outstanding scholars whose work continues to shape the future of law. Their admission to the Academy is a well-earned recognition of their leadership, impact and commitment to justice. UNSW Law & Justice congratulates both professors and looks forward to their continued contributions to legal education, research and reform.”
