Prince of Wales Hospital (POWH) has hosted a landmark national training course in thoracic ultrasound and bronchoscopy at the UNSW Health Translation Hub (HTH), marking an important milestone for respiratory education and innovation.
Held for the first time at the UNSW Health Translation Hub, and only the second time hosted by Prince of Wales Hospital, the course is Australia’s only combined introductory thoracic ultrasound and bronchoscopy course, bringing together senior respiratory specialists, trainees and industry partners from across NSW, interstate and overseas.
For UNSW students, the program offered a rare opportunity to build confidence through hands-on learning, expert mentoring and realistic simulation. Participants practised bronchoscopy techniques, thoracic ultrasound and the management of serious complications, including airway bleeding using high fidelity simulation facilities
Respiratory Advanced Trainee, Anindita Dey said the course would have a direct impact on her clinical practice.
“The bronchial anatomy teaching was remarkable,” Ms Dey said. “As a first-year respiratory advanced trainee, the thoracic ultrasound techniques and steps were demonstrated in a systematic way by respiratory physicians, which is very helpful in the clinical setting.”
The move to the UNSW Health Translation Hub gave participants access to state-of-the-art bronchoscopy technology, advanced ultrasound capabilities and high-fidelity simulation facilities through the UNSW HTH Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre. It also reflected the strong collaboration between Prince of Wales Hospital and UNSW Sydney within the Randwick Health & Innovation Precinct.
The course was supported by a wide range of industry partners, highlighting the importance of collaboration across health, academia and industry in preparing clinicians for real-world patient care.
By bringing people, expertise and technology together, the course reinforced Prince of Wales Hospital’s role as a national leader in respiratory medicine training and demonstrated how the UNSW Health Translation Hub is helping translate education and innovation into better outcomes for patients.
The UNSW Health Translation Hub is a transformational project within the Randwick Health & Innovation Precinct, boldly reimagining the future of health.
