UNSW students were treated to an unforgettable night at Allianz Stadium, with more than 100 students attending the NSW Waratahs’ clash against the Western Force as part of the University’s ongoing partnership.

With the stadium lit up in UNSW colours and over 10,000 supporters in attendance, the night delivered both on and off the field, showcasing the impact of the partnership in creating premium, first-time sporting experiences for students.

There was strong UNSW representation on the field, with Elite Athlete Program members Sidney Harvey and Andrew Kellaway featuring for the Waratahs, while UNSW alumnus Dylan Pietsch lined up for the Western Force. The match itself lived up to expectations, with a tight contest throughout before the Force edged the Waratahs 20–17 in a hard-fought finish.

While the on-field action delivered, one of the standout moments of the night came at halftime, when four UNSW students stepped onto Allianz Stadium to take part in the fan catch challenge. Dan Nguyen, Sonali Singh, Lucas Velasque and Emrik Moe took centre stage as balls were launched over 50 metres into the air from the stadium cannon, with each student attempting to complete the catch in front of the crowd.

The opportunity to walk onto the field and participate in a live match-day activation in front of thousands of fans was a defining moment, adding another layer to what was already a memorable experience for the group. For many in attendance, the night marked their first live rugby union match, highlighting the importance of these experiences in broadening exposure to elite sport while strengthening connection to the UNSW community.

From watching UNSW athletes compete at the highest level to stepping onto the field themselves, the event captured exactly what the partnership is designed to deliver, providing students with access to experiences they would not otherwise have. Another standout night at Allianz Stadium, and another example of the impact of UNSW delivering meaningful, memorable student experiences through its partnerships.
