Through UNSW’s ongoing partnership with the Sydney Swans, 200 students were given the opportunity to attend Friday night’s Sydney Derby against the GWS Giants at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The initiative continues to play an important role in enhancing the student experience, providing access to major sporting events while showcasing UNSW students competing at the highest level.

The night doubled as a celebration of UNSW’s Elite Athlete Program presence in the AFL, with six current Swans connected to the University featuring in the clash: Joel Amartey, Callum Mills, James Rowbottom, Sam Wicks, Logan McDonald and Angus Sheldrick.

Several of these athletes continue to build strong profiles both on and off the field while balancing elite sport with study. Mills remains one of the competition’s premier leaders, while Rowbottom continues to set the benchmark for pressure midfielders across the league. McDonald and Amartey are developing into key pillars of Sydney’s forward line, with Sheldrick emerging as an exciting young midfield option pushing into senior ranks.

The atmosphere reflected the scale of the occasion, with 43,986 fans packing into the SCG, the largest Sydney Derby crowd ever recorded at the venue. For many in the UNSW cohort, it was a completely new experience, with over 140 students attending their first AFL match at the ground.

They were immediately rewarded. UNSW had front-row seats to an electric start, with Amartey and McDonald kicking two of the first three goals of the game directly in front of the UNSW bay, sparking early energy among the student group.

The match itself delivered both drama and dominance. Play was halted early in the second half as lightning from an approaching storm triggered a delay of just under an hour under AFL safety protocols. Despite the interruption, the Swans returned with control and composure, powering away to a commanding 107–66 victory.

UNSW’s presence on the scoreboard remained strong throughout, with Amartey finishing with two goals, McDonald adding two of his own, and Sheldrick also hitting the scoreboard in an all-round contribution.

Beyond the result, the night reinforced the value of UNSW’s partnership with the Sydney Swans. The opportunity for students to witness their peers competing on one of the biggest stages in Australian sport continues to elevate the student experience and strengthen the connection between elite performance and university life.

For the 200 students in attendance, it was more than just a game. It was a firsthand look at where dedication to both study and sport can lead, played out under lights in front of a record SCG crowd.

A special thank you to the team at Arc Sport, who once again played a key role behind the scenes, managing logistics on the night and ensuring students received their tickets smoothly and were safely guided to their seats. Their support continues to be integral in delivering experiences like this for the UNSW community.
