ICFHS researcher highlights rising e-scooter injuries which are further burdening hospital systems

ICFHS researcher Professor Alexandra Martiniuk, is co-author of a new study that highlights a sharp rise in e‑scooter injuries. The research analysed nearly 4,700 emergency department presentations in the state of Victoria, Australia, with injuries among children aged two to 14 increasing from 64 cases in 2022 to 263 in 2025.  Professor Martiniuk notes that this growing trend is placing pressure on busy emergency departments. While teens and young men remain the most affected group, the rapid increase in child injuries is particularly concerning, especially as children under 16 are not permitted to ride e‑scooters on roads demonstrating the need to act upon existing governance as well as re-think and implement other safety measures.
