History made as UNSWFC Women lift first-ever Sapphire Cup

UNSWFC Women's First Grade side has made history, claiming the Sapphire Cup for the first time with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manly United FC.

The landmark triumph is the latest chapter in the club's remarkable rise through the women's football ranks, with UNSWFC continuing to establish itself as one of the NPL NSW Women's competition's premier clubs. After years of climbing the divisions and building a competitive program, the club can now celebrate its first Sapphire Cup title.

It was a fitting reward for a side that showed both attacking quality and defensive resilience throughout an entertaining final.

The opening half was played at a frenetic pace, with both teams creating opportunities in an end-to-end contest. Abbey Lemon forced an early save from Manly United goalkeeper Jodie Drever, while Erin Nayler was equally alert at the other end as she safely gathered a dangerous early header.

The breakthrough arrived in the 37th minute when Chloe Smith produced the moment that ultimately decided the final. Finding space inside the penalty area, Smith lifted a composed finish over Drever and into the top corner to hand UNSWFC a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Manly United responded strongly in the second half, applying sustained pressure as they searched for an equaliser. However, UNSWFC remained composed under pressure, with Nayler providing confidence from the back and the defensive unit standing firm against a series of dangerous attacks.

Player of the Match Poppy Channing was outstanding throughout the contest, producing several crucial defensive interventions as UNSWFC protected its narrow advantage. Even as Manly committed numbers forward in the dying stages, including goalkeeper Drever joining the attack late, the women's side refused to be denied.

When the final whistle sounded, the celebrations began as players, coaches and supporters celebrated a historic achievement for the club.

Goalscorer Chloe Smith said the victory represented the culmination of years of hard work and belief throughout the program.

"It feels incredible. Winning the Sapphire Cup was one of our biggest goals this season, and the team has worked so hard to make it happen, so we're all extremely proud," Smith said.

"As a club that's spent the last few years climbing up the divisions and fighting to establish ourselves in NPL 1, to now win the Sapphire Cup and make history for UNSWFC is such a special achievement.

"It's a really exciting moment for everyone involved and shows the potential this group and the club have moving forward."

Player of the Match Poppy Channing praised the resilience shown by the group against a quality Manly United outfit.

"It was a really tough battle. Manly was such a good opponent," Channing said.

With attention now turning back to the league campaign, Channing believes the Sapphire Cup triumph can provide the confidence needed for a strong finish to the season.

"Having this revival will be really good for the end of the season. Hopefully we keep this momentum and hopefully go to the finals with this kind of attitude."

The historic victory is more than just the club's first Sapphire Cup; it is a reflection of the growth, ambition and culture that has driven UNSWFC's women's program in recent years. With silverware now secured and momentum on their side, the Women's First Grade team will be aiming to carry that confidence into the closing stages of the NPL NSW Women's season.
