As a world-leading authority on ocean thermodynamics, UNSW Emeritus Professor Trevor McDougall is no stranger to recognition. He’s received the Prime Minister’s Prize for Science in Australia, the NSW Premier’s Prize for Scientist of the Year, and the NSW Premier’s Prize for Excellence in Mathematics, Earth Sciences, Chemistry and Physics. He’s also been elected a Fellow of The Royal Society of NSW and a Fellow of The Royal Society of London.

As an applied mathematics researcher based in the UNSW School of Mathematics and Statistics, Professor McDougall has dedicated his professional life to understanding the fundamental physics of the ocean, including how it moves and its mixing processes, at times overturning long held assumptions of how the ocean works. His discoveries have positioned Australia at the forefront of ocean physics and climate research.

Professor McDougall has now been honoured as a 2027 Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS), recognising outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences or their applications during a substantial period of years.

Professor McDougall shares the 2027 AMS Fellow honour with his UNSW colleague, Scientia Professor, Matthew England, renowned for his work on large-scale ocean circulation and its influence on regional and global climate, with a particular focus on the Southern Hemisphere, including Antarctic climate processes.
