A mixed relay title and individual silver medals for Logan Campbell and Tamsin Colley highlighted a successful weekend of racing in tough Ballarat conditions.
UNSW elite long distance runners have returned from the 2026 UniSport Nationals Cross Country Championships with gold and silver medals after an impressive weekend of racing in Ballarat.
In tough, wet and muddy conditions in Ballarat, Victoria, the championships were held in conjunction with the Australian Cross Country Championships at Victoria Park, bringing together leading university runners from across the country alongside some of Australia's best cross country athletes.
The weekend culminated in gold for UNSW in the mixed 4x2000m relay, with Caitlyn Tan, Sophie Ferenczi, Logan Campbell and Ryan Gilmour combining to take out the Senior title.
All four athletes backed up from individual 10km races the previous day to produce a combined time of 29:54.
The UNSW quartet finished third across the combined Senior and Under 20 field, with the only two teams ahead of them competing in the Under 20 category.
UNSW was comfortably the leading Senior team, finishing 41 seconds clear of Yarra Ranges Athletics 1 in 30:35 to secure gold and cap a successful weekend in Ballarat.
The relay title completed an outstanding championships for Campbell, who also claimed silver in the UniSport Open Men's 10km.
Returning to the event as the defending UniSport champion after taking the title in 2025, Campbell completed the challenging 10km course in 34:20.
His performance placed him 13th in the broader Australian Championships field and second among the university competitors, with University of Melbourne's Edward Marks taking the UniSport victory after finishing third overall in 32:23.
Campbell led a five-strong UNSW contingent in the men's event.
Fellow relay gold medallist Gilmour was the next UNSW runner home, crossing the line in 37:47 to finish 54th overall in the Australian Championships.
Charles Bennett followed in 38:26, while Nicholas Hyde completed the course in 41:08 and Ken Braganza crossed the line in 44:01, giving UNSW five finishers in the Open Men's race.
UNSW added another silver medal through Tamsin Colley in the Senior Para Women's 3km.
Competing in the T36/F36 classification, Colley completed the course in 17:04 and recorded a result score of 34.30 to finish second behind Annabelle Colman's 34.33.
The narrow margin saw Colley take silver in another strong national-level performance for the UNSW para-athlete.
Tan came agonisingly close to adding another individual medal to the UNSW tally in the Open Women's 10km. She produced a strong 43:14 run to finish 20th in the full Australian Championships field and fourth among UniSport competitors. It represented another step forward for Tan at the championships after finishing ninth in the UniSport competition in 2025.
Tan would ultimately leave Ballarat with gold after returning the following day as part of UNSW's victorious mixed relay quartet.
Ferenczi also completed a busy weekend of racing, finishing the individual women's 10km in 47:12 before joining Tan, Campbell and Gilmour to claim relay gold less than 24 hours later.
UNSW fielded a second team in Sunday's mixed relay, with UNSW B completing the 4x2000m event in 33:33 and finishing 19th across the combined Senior and Under 20 field.
Across two days of competition, UNSW athletes featured throughout the Open men's and women's races, para competition and mixed relay, finishing the championships with a national relay title and two individual silver medals.
Campbell was at the centre of the medal haul with gold and silver, while Tan combined her relay gold with a fourth-place individual finish. Ferenczi and Gilmour also returned home as national university champions, while Colley's silver added another medal to UNSW's weekend in Ballarat.
