UNSW Law & Justice is preparing for a major refurbishment of the Law Building in 2027, creating more purposeful spaces for legal education, research, collaboration and student life.
The project will support the faculty’s ambitions under its strategy Law & Justice 2030 and its vision for a confident, collegial and globally leading law faculty.
The Law & Justice Building is more than a place to work and study. It is an academic home where students and staff learn, undertake research, exchange ideas, build professional relationships and engage with the wider community. The refurbishment has been designed around the distinctive needs of legal education, with spaces that support both focused study and connection.
“At its heart, our faculty is a community built on ideas, collaboration and a shared commitment to making a positive impact through law and justice,” said Professor Andrew Lynch, Dean of UNSW Law & Justice.
“This refurbishment will ensure our facilities better support the way we learn, teach, research and engage with the profession and wider community, now and into the future.”
New spaces are coming
The renewed building will include five new teaching spaces tailored to the faculty’s needs, as well as additional informal learning and collaboration spaces across Levels 1 and 2 and a renewed Moot Court.
Three dedicated Law & Justice student society rooms, with nearby collaboration space, will provide a welcome improvement on the current single room. The refurbishment will also deliver an improved Indigenous student space with better access for all students, and new Level 1 amenities including all-gender toilets and a parents’ room.
The Law Library will remain operational throughout the project, with no changes currently planned to its operation.
What to expect throughout the construction period
Construction will commence in December 2026 and is expected to continue throughout 2027. Teaching and study will continue during the works, although students will experience some temporary changes to spaces, access, staff locations and student activities.
Some staff will work from temporary locations across campus, meaning student consultations may take place in different locations or online. The Law Society, Law Journal and mooting will also operate through temporary arrangements while the refurbishment is underway.
“We know the refurbishment will create a period of change for students and staff,” Professor Lynch said.
“Our priority is to maintain continuity in teaching, study, student support and Faculty life, while keeping our community informed throughout the transition.”
The project is expected to be completed in time to support the commencement of the 2028 academic year. Students will then benefit from more purpose-designed teaching spaces, improved opportunities to study and collaborate, upgraded student society facilities and a more inclusive and connected Law & Justice environment.
The refurbishment reflects UNSW Law & Justice’s commitment to excellence in legal education and to creating an academic home that strengthens connections between students, staff, visitors and the broader community.
Updates on access, temporary arrangements and construction activity will be shared throughout the project. Learn more about the project.
