Federal Attorney General Robert McClelland to open major international conference at UNSW
The future shape of dispute resolution including the role of the judge and lawyer will be the topic of a major international conference at the University of New South Wales next week (1-2 December).
Dispute Resolution in the Next 40 Years – Repertoire or Revolution will be officially launched by Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland. The conference features key-note addresses by Lord Justice Jackson, UK Court of Appeal and the Hon TJ Bathurst, Chief Justice, Supreme Court of NSW.
Dispute Resolution is adapting and developing in response to the demands of Australian society and the global community. A greater range of dispute resolution mechanisms has developed and courts have sought to improve and streamline their procedures.
Yet many questions remain unanswered including: the future role of the judge; matching dispute resolution processes with disputes; the provision of access to justice to multiple claimants through class actions; the role of lawyers in alternative dispute resolution processes; the future options for international dispute resolution; and reform of civil procedure through international comparisons.
