The UNSW Battery Ecosystem is dedicated to driving Australia’s transition to a sustainable battery future. Its mission is to innovate and educate, bridging the gap between research and commercialisation and positioning Australia as a global leader.

The Ecosystem serves as a one-stop shop for Australia’s battery research, development, and commercialisation needs. By integrating UNSW’s world-class infrastructure and researchers, it enables cutting-edge research and collaboration to accelerate innovation across the entire battery value chain.

Translation and commercialisation

UNSW researchers are committed to turning their ideas into real-world solutions. They do this through various pathways, from launching start-ups to collaborating directly with industry. Our staff and students are leaders in commercialising new technologies and building successful businesses.

We work closely with industry partners to tackle challenges across the entire battery value chain, from mining and processing to integration and recycling. Collaborating with industry and government helps us solve today’s problems and proactively address tomorrows.

Research and development

For over 40 years, UNSW has been at the forefront of battery research and development. In the 1980s, Professor Maria Skyllas-Kazacos pioneered the invention of the vanadium redox flow battery at UNSW. Today, our research covers the entire battery value chain across multiple chemistries. This includes ore extraction and processing to purification, active material synthesis, electrode fabrication, and cell manufacturing.

This is supported by advanced testing, including destructive and abuse testing, as well as pack and module design, system integration, and grid integration. To close the loop, we focus strongly on cell reuse, repurposing, and recycling.

Our work spans lithium-ion and redox flow batteries, and next-generation technologies such as sodium-ion, potassium-ion, all-solid-state, microbatteries, lithium-sulfur, and aqueous batteries.

Education and training

As the battery industry grows in Australia, UNSW graduates are finding roles across the battery workforce. The technical expertise offered in our courses allows integration into the battery workforce.
