Project

Digital approaches for understanding behaviours prior to suicide

Personalise
People walking through a mall

A significant proportion of suicides occur in public spaces. Some frequently used locations have implemented alarm systems to increase the likelihood of third-party intervention, however this can be too late. This project uses archived data to understand behaviours that precede suicide attempts in public settings. We aim to see if it is possible to automatically identify behavioural warning signs, potentially allowing for earlier detection and intervention to prevent these suicides. Working with people with lived experience, best practice guidelines for acceptable, safe and effective interventions will be developed.

Our research programs: Mental health

Nearly half of Australians will experience a mental health disorder at some time in their life, with one-in-six experiencing thoughts of suicide.

Our capabilities: Digital health

At the Centre for Big Data Research in Health (CBDRH), we undertake research to understand how digital approaches can best be applied in clinical- and consumer-facing applications.
