X-ray Facilities
Who we are
We are Australia’s largest in-house X-ray facility, providing comprehensive analytical capabilities for advanced materials research and industrial applications.
We deliver detailed structural, compositional, and surface characterisations across a wide range of materials using X-ray Diffraction, Single Crystal Diffraction, X-ray Fluorescence, X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, Micro-Computed Tomography, and surface analysis techniques such as XPS and ToF-SIMS.
Our instruments are equipped with multiple X-ray sources, non-ambient and in-situ capabilities, and high-resolution imaging systems.
All research is supported by our expert teams, who offer technical advice, training, analytical services, and grant support.
Our facilities
Chemical Crystallography Laboratory
Our facility specialises in single-crystal X-ray diffraction, offering crystal structure determination services to researchers at UNSW and external institutions.
Surface Analysis Laboratory
The Surface Analysis Laboratory specialises in advanced surface characterisation using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy (UPS), and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS).
Tyree X-ray Micro-CT Facility
The Tyree X-ray Micro-CT Laboratory offers non-destructive high-resolution 3D imaging technology to study various materials. Our facility uses advanced software to process micro-CT images.
X-ray Diffraction Laboratory (XRD)
X-ray diffraction is the most common technique to determine the arrangement of atoms in bulk microcrystalline films and solids. The XRD laboratory hosts 10 diffractometers and 20 processing computers.
X-ray Fluorescence and Absorption Spectroscopy Laboratory (XRF & XAS)
We perform X-ray induced fluorescence from solids enabling elemental analysis from ppm to percentage level. The laboratory is equipped with WD-XRF (wavelength-dispersive) and ED-XRF (energy-dispersive) spectrometers, enabling quantitative elemental analysis of bulk materials.
