Cortivision PHOTON CAP C20
Lightweight fNIRS device that measures time-resolved changes of brain oxygenation through optodes positioned on the scalp
Description
Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an emerging non-invasive neuroimaging technique that is mobile and does not require the use of disposable accessories such as gels, conductive liquids or disposable electrodes. This makes fNIRS an ideal tool for research in neuroscience, psychology, education and sports.
The PHOTON CAP C20 is comprised of an elastic cap with 16 small infrared light sources (LEDs) that emit near-infrared light towards the surface of the brain. The system is further equipped with 10 highly sensitive silicon photodiode detectors to measure near-infrared light.
By detecting how much light at two distinct wavelengths is absorbed, fNIRS can measure changes in oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, giving insights into neural activity and cognitive functions.
The amplifier module (worn on the upper arm for mobile applications) is connected to the NIR light emitters and detectors via a cable bundle. It sends the processed signal via wireless communication to the recording software on a nearby laptop.
fNIRS can be used in conjunction with a Polhemus 3D Digitizer for the 3D location of optode positions, allowing for precise mapping of brain activity.
