The classic structure-function paradigm of proteins contends that a protein exhibits a single well-defined folded structure that gives rise to its biological function. Nonetheless, a growing number of “metamorphic” proteins have been discovered that interconvert between different folded conformations in response to environmental stimuli. Harnessing the ability of metamorphic proteins to change shape should enable the creation of reconfigurable nanomaterials for material applications. The externally funded project will apply protein engineering methodologies to create protein biomaterials that change structure in response to environmental stimuli. The project will involve international collaborators who will subsequently apply the engineered proteins for fabrication of reconfigurable nanomaterials.
