This project is part of the UNSW Scientia PhD Scholarship Scheme

Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend and a one-off Global Mobility Grant to conduct international engagement activities.

Children with intellectual and developmental disability experience substantially higher rates of mental health problems than their peers, yet many face barriers to accessing timely, appropriate and effective support. This PhD project will develop a co-designed service pathway to improve access to mental health prevention and early intervention for children with intellectual and developmental disability and their families.

Working closely with people with lived experience, families, health professionals, educators and disability providers, the candidate will identify barriers to care, review international evidence, and design practical, scalable solutions to improve service access and coordination. The project will explore how health, disability and education systems can work together to provide accessible, inclusive and culturally safe mental health support.

The candidate will be supervised by leading researchers at UNSW, the National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health, and University College London. The PhD will contribute to vital work to improve mental health outcomes and reduce lifelong mental health inequities for children with intellectual and developmental disability and their families.
