Enhancing the protective capability of photovoltaic modules

Hailstones cause significant damage to photovoltaic modules worldwide. This PhD project will explore innovative approaches to improving module resilience through the incorporation of thin, cost-effective material layers designed to limit the propagation of impact-induced damage.

Using experimental, computational and analytical methods, the research will investigate the fundamental mechanisms governing damage initiation and growth in photovoltaic modules. The findings will contribute to improved impact-resistance testing, damage prediction and the development of more durable photovoltaic systems.

Desired background

A Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent qualification, is preferred. Applicants with a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Physics or Materials Science will also be considered. A research master’s degree, or a master’s degree with a substantial research component, would be advantageous. The successful applicant must also meet the University of New South Wales’ admission requirements.

Scholarship

$39,206 per annum (2026 rate, indexed) for 3.5 years

Eligibility

• Have a relevant four-year bachelor’s degree with First Class or Upper Second Class Honours—normally equivalent to UNSW Honours Class IIA or higher from a Global Tob 250 University; or
• Have a Master by Research/MPhil with a substantial research component; or
• Have a coursework master’s degree with a distinction average and a significant research component; or
• Equivalent academic qualifications, research experience or professional experience accepted by the relevant Faculty Higher Degree Committee.
• Meet UNSW’s English-language requirements.
• Demonstrate research capability—such as an honours thesis, publications, research experience or relevant professional outputs.
• Satisfy visa and other relevant requirements.
