This project is part of the UNSW Scientia PhD Scholarship Scheme

Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend and a one-off Global Mobility Grant to conduct international engagement activities.

Trans and gender diverse (‘trans’) people in prison are one of the most vulnerable, stigmatised, and disadvantaged groups in the community. Correctional and prison health systems have struggled to address their needs and human rights effectively due to a lack of research to understand this population and integrated approaches to their care and safety. This project addresses this gap by bringing together consumers, community organisations, inter/national researchers, clinicians and government agencies to undertake the research required to co-design a ‘whole-of-setting’, multidisciplinary and culturally responsive model of care for trans people in prison.

The project incorporates international case studies, a national policy review, lived experience interviews, and a retrospective study to understand key risks, care needs and best practice. This evidence will be translated collectively with multi-stakeholders into a policy-ready model of care and policy development guidelines to enable future scalability nationally and beyond.
