Expressions of interest are open for a new UNSW node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures (CIEHF).
CIEHF will develop new approaches to bring Indigenous and environmental histories to the forefront of land and sea management. By looking back 1000 years and forward 100 years, CIEHF aims to develop new integrated approaches to Caring for Country. CIEHF will join with Indigenous Partner organisations to do field, historical, archival and modelling research, as well as interrogate the wealth of data in museum and other legacy collections.
As well as a stipend and research funds, these PhD and MPhil positions offer exciting opportunities for collaboration and professional development, including internships at partner organisations across Australia, on-Country training and masterclasses, structured mentoring programs, and co-supervision between universities and Indigenous partner organisations.
Possible areas of research include history, Indigenous languages, land and sea management practices, environmental sciences and environmental humanities. Primary supervisors do not need to be formally affiliated with the Centre, and students can be supervised by a suitable expert based at any UNSW Faculty or School. Supervisory teams will include supervisors from another university or Partner Organisation affiliated with the Centre.
These opportunities start from July 2024, based at either UNSW Sydney or UNSW Canberra. Further scholarships will be opening in 2025, 2026 and 2027.
