Osteoporotic fractures are common, costly and associated with increased risk of future fracture and premature mortality. High-risk patients often have multiple chronic conditions. Yet, information on osteoporosis treatment efficacy and safety in this population, who are systematically omitted in clinical trials is unknown.
Our team has demonstrated that the majority of women and men at high risk of fracture are not investigated or treated for osteoporosis. Furthermore, those with multiple chronic conditions were even less likely to be investigated or treated for osteoporosis.
This research project will identify and characterise at a population level the group of patients at highest fracture risk and quantify treatment efficacy and harms in this population. It will also involve a cost/benefit evaluation of osteoporosis treatment in high-risk groups where treatment benefit is unknown.
This research project will be suitable for a graduate of data science, epidemiology, biostatistics, mathematics and statistics, or a medical or health science graduate with epidemiological/biostatistical experience.
