AZX Biotech is developing a regenerative biologic designed to restore cartilage and slow the progression of knee osteoarthritis.
-
Healthcare systems, insurers and patients face escalating costs from knee osteoarthritis, affecting over 400 million people globally, with annual treatment and productivity losses exceeding AU$300 billion. Current therapies only manage symptoms or lead to AU$30,000+ joint replacements. AZX-618 restores cartilage, delays surgery, reduces disability, and lowers long-term healthcare expenditure.
-
AZX-618 is a first-in-class regenerative biologic designed to restore damaged cartilage and modify the progression of knee osteoarthritis, rather than simply relieving symptoms. Administered as a minimally invasive intra-articular injection, it has the potential to delay or eliminate the need for joint replacement surgery. Revenue will be generated through product sales to hospitals, specialist clinics and healthcare providers, supported by reimbursement from public and private payers in major global markets.
-
Our initial customers are orthopaedic surgeons, hospitals and specialist musculoskeletal clinics treating moderate-to-severe knee osteoarthritis patients eligible for biologic intervention before joint replacement surgery.
-
- AU$500,000 seed funding (cash and in kind) from industry partner.
- Supply agreement with manufacturing partner covering production, toxicology, and regulatory data.
- Product designed to fit existing MBS knee injection billing codes, removing a key reimbursement barrier at launch.
Ageing populations, rising obesity and unsustainable joint replacement costs are driving demand for disease-modifying therapies, while advances in regenerative medicine regulations make AZX-618 commercially viable today.
