Summary

This thesis is a holistic examination of the change in Myanmar-West relations from confrontation during the period of the Tatmadaw (Defence Forces in Myanmar) government (1988 to 2011) to rapprochement between the two sides during the U Thein Sein government period (2011-2016). It applies foreign policy analysis (FPA) to assess the interactions of internal and external factors responsible for the deterioration in Myanmar-West relations under the Tatmadaw government and the rapprochement between them under the U Thein Sein Government.
