Dr Briony Larance

PhD, BSc (Psych) (Hons) - Briony Larance is a Conjoint Senior Research Fellow at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC), UNSW Sydney, and a Senior Research Fellow and Vice Chancellor’s postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wollongong.  She completed a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) early-career research fellowship (2014-2018) at NDARC examining the trajectories and health consequences of pharmaceutical opioid use. Her research interests include the use and extra-medical use of pharmaceutical opioids, 'abuse-deterrent' formulations, treatment of substance use disorders, opioid dependence, the use of anabolic steroids, and interventions to improve the health and wellbeing of people who inject drugs. She has been involved in epidemiological and clinical studies utilising a range of methods including randomised-controlled trials, post-marketing surveillance studies, illicit drug surveillance, analyses of linked administrative data and cohort studies. Her current projects include: developing and validating an opioid-related behaviour scale; a prospective cohort study of people prescribed opioids for non-cancer pain; a post-marketing study of tapentadol; a mixed-methods study to increase the capacity of a regional Local Health District to respond to methamphetamine-related harm; and an implementation trial of long-acting (depot) buprenorphine injections for opioid dependence.
