Dr Dominique Estival

Since receiving her PhD in Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania (USA) Dr Estival’s career has been at the frontier between academia and industry. As a linguist, her research spans the computational modelling of language change, machine translation, linguistic engineering, spoken dialogue systems and aviation communication. As a pilot and a flight instructor, she has first-hand experience of student pilots’ difficulties with radio communication and she studies how pilot training, language background and contextual factors affect pilots’ ability to communicate while flying. Since 2008, Dr Estival and Prof Molesworth have collaborated on research in aviation communication, resulting in 8 co-authored journal articles or book chapters and one book (2016, paperback 2018). Dr Estival has also pursued her own research and collaborated with other members of the Research Group of the International Civil Aviation English Association (ICAEA). Her book on the role and responsibilities of native English speakers in aviation communication has just been published by Routledge.
