Emeritus Professor Hal Pawson

Designated Emeritus Professor in 2025, Hal Pawson was formerly Associate Director at UNSW’s City Futures Research Centre (2011-25). In this role he led numerous research projects funded by the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI), by the Australian Research Council (ARC), and by non-government agencies. Hal’s key interests include housing policy governance and strategy, private rental housing, homelessness and social housing. From 2011-19 he served as Australasian Editor for the international journal Housing Studies; from 2019-23 he was a Housing Studies Managing Editor. Earlier in his academic career, Hal worked at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh from 1995-2011, where he retains an Honorary Professorship. He is a non-Executive Director of Community Housing Canberra and an unpaid policy advisor to Senator David Pocock. As an Emeritus Professor, Hal continues to contribute to some CFRC research projects, as well as presenting guest lectures on UNSW courses, but he is no longer taking on new PhD students.
