Jordan is a Senior Research Fellow based at the Sustainable Development Reform Hub, School of Global and Public Law. His interdisciplinary research focuses on:
Bridging science and policy through natural capital accounting — including the use of international accounting standards to measure and manage environmental assets and ecosystem services.
Using citizen science for public policy — in particular how citizen science could inform policy and management to address the global challenge of plastic pollution.
Strengthening evidence for ocean governance frameworks — through the integration of multiple streams of data and knowledge to support marine spatial planning, marine protected areas and other effective ecosystem based management frameworks.

Maldives: His work in the Maldives centers on developing Ocean Accounts for island communities, with particular emphasis on Laamu Atoll. This research integrates community-based environmental management approaches with Ocean Accounting frameworks, documenting how local populations interact with and depend on marine ecosystems. The work extends to supporting UNESCO Biosphere Reserve nominations through comprehensive biodiversity documentation, creating strong linkages between Ocean Accounts and international conservation frameworks.
Indonesia - He is working with local practitioners to advance Ocean Accounting within the country, fostering knowledge exchange and developing technical skills among diverse stakeholders.
Blue Carbon & Climate - Jordan collaborates with Australia's DCCEEW through the Blue Carbon Accelerator Fund, researching blue carbon sequestration in marine ecosystems. This work demonstrates how Ocean Accounts can support countries' NDC and NBSAP reporting obligations, strengthening the connection between environmental accounting and climate commitments.
International Partnerships - Through the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP), Jordan maintains active collaborations with UNESCAP, IORA, and various UN agencies. This includes contributions to major projects like REDRESS and ENDhERI, advancing Ocean Accounting frameworks across diverse geographical and institutional contexts.
Methodological Contributions - Jordan's methodological work focuses on implementing SEEA-EA frameworks, developing Basic Spatial Units (BSUs), and applying Material Flow Analysis and benefit transfer methods. They create policy briefs and training materials that effectively bridge the science-policy interface, making complex accounting methodologies accessible to practitioners.
Community Engagement - Central to Jordan's approach is incorporating FPIC principles and emphasizing sustainable marine resource management in Small Island Developing States, ensuring that Ocean Accounting initiatives are grounded in community needs and local knowledge systems.
