Dr Mihir Desai is a Vascular and Interventional radiologist and a Conjoint Lecturer at UNSW Sydney, where he completed his medical degree before specialist training at Prince of Wales Hospital. He practises at St George and Macquarie University Hospital, treating patients with minimally invasive, image-guided techniques that offer an alternative to open surgery, often with smaller incisions and a shorter recovery.

His clinical interests include prostate artery embolisation for an enlarged prostate; musculoskeletal embolisation for knee osteoarthritis (genicular artery embolisation), frozen shoulder, and Achilles tendinopathy; uterine fibroid embolisation; interventional oncology; and liver intervention. He also has a particular interest in the interventional management of critically unwell patients, including pulmonary embolism, trauma, and portal hypertension.

After qualifying in Sydney, Dr Desai trained for nearly three years at centres in London and Europe. He began at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, one of Europe's foremost centres for vascular and interventional radiology, developing expertise in vascular intervention and prostate artery embolisation. He then worked at the Royal Berkshire Hospital under Professor Mark Little, a global authority in prostate artery embolisation and genicular artery embolisation, before completing advanced training in hepatobiliary intervention and portal hypertension at the Royal Free London. He was the first Australian to receive the CIRSE Fellowship Award, training under Professor Afshin Gangi at CHU Strasbourg, the first IASIOS Centre of Excellence for interventional oncology.

Returning to Guy's and St Thomas' as a Consultant, Dr Desai worked alongside Dr Sabharwal to perform the United Kingdom's first embolisation for thyroid multinodular goitre. He is an elected member of KHP Academic Surgery at King's Health Partners, London. He has since returned to Sydney to practise, and teaches and supervises interventional radiology trainees at UNSW.
