My area of research interest centers on online digital media assets, especially image credibility. Key to my research is the important distinction between photographs (photos of real people, places and events) and manipulated images or photoart (images created or changed by image manipulation software and/or Artificial Intelligence).

I am working on this problem of mis- and disinformation at an international level with the JPEG international community.  As Co-chair of JPEG Trust, I have been a leader in creating a solution for online trust of our media assets.  This solution has been recently finalised as an international standard (ISO/IEC 21617-1) with the publication expected in October 2024.

Augmenting my interest in solving the problem of online trust, I work in the area of physiological signal processing using neural networks, deep learning and bio-inspired computing, particularly as it pertains to human recognition of deception and affective reasoning.

This research fits into my overall goals of contributing to the way education and information empower beneficial change in the world.
