Ji Seung Yeul is a Research Professor in the School of Architecture at Hanyang University and a Visiting Senior Fellow at UNSW Sydney. His research integrates generative design, BIM and digital twins with EEG- and AI-based analysis to explore how people perceive and respond emotionally in architectural environments. For over 11 years, he has led EEG research in the architectural domain with continuous government support, advancing methods to connect human cognition and affect with design decision-making.

He has published extensively on EEG and architecture in SCIE-indexed journals, alongside patents and authored books, and has been actively involved in producing research documentaries and media programmes with major broadcasters such as KBS, SBS and Arirang TV. These works have introduced neuroarchitecture and EEG-based environmental studies to both academic and public audiences. His funded projects span smart shelters, affective lighting systems and cultural heritage management, with outcomes recognised in exhibitions, media features and policy discussions.

Through this multidisciplinary trajectory, Ji’s work seeks to establish architecture as a field where neuroscience, computation and design converge, ultimately shaping more intelligent, affective and inclusive built environments.

Ji Seung Yeul has been instrumental in pioneering research at the intersection of architecture, computation and neuroscience. Over the past 11 years, with continuous support from the Korean government, he has advanced EEG-based research in architectural environments, exploring how brainwaves can reveal cognitive and emotional responses to built spaces. His funded research program has been substantial, with cumulative grant income exceeding several million dollars, covering topics such as smart shelters, affective lighting, digital twins, BIM-driven decision support, and cultural heritage repair history management.

He has published extensively in SCIE-indexed journals (Applied Sciences, Sustainability, Energies) and KCI-listed journals, producing a significant body of knowledge on EEG and neuroarchitecture. His research outputs also include books (Smart Shelter Space 2018, 2020; Computer Vision in Architecture with LabVIEW 2015), registered patents and software (e.g., BIM-based design support frameworks, EEG receiver systems), and numerous conference papers presented at leading international venues such as CAADRIA and ISAIA.

Beyond academia, Ji has actively contributed to public engagement. He has been featured in major Korean broadcasting networks (KBS, SBS, Arirang TV), producing research-based documentaries and programmes that introduce neuroscience and architecture to the wider public. His work has also been showcased in international exhibitions, including Research Pavilion #3: Research Ecologies, Giudecca, Venice (2019), Smart Shelter exhibitions in Malaysia (2018), and VR experience exhibitions in Seoul (2017).

Within the University, Ji’s contribution has been strategic, enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration between architecture, engineering and computer science. His research program is shaped by a clear vision of connecting user experience and emotion data with intelligent, inclusive and sustainable architectural design.
