Yao Cheng completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of New South Wales under the supervision of Professor Naresh Kumar. He received his Master’s degree in Biological Engineering from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and his Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Pharmacy from Chongqing Medical University.

His research focuses on the discovery and development of small-molecule anticancer agents with potential therapeutic applications. Working at the intersection of synthetic organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacology, Dr. Cheng has designed and synthesized a range of quinone-based compounds and evaluated their in vitro and in vivo anticancer activities. He has also explored their mechanisms of action, identifying key protein targets such as Keap1 and investigating how these interactions influence cellular redox balance and metabolic pathways.

In addition to his biological investigations, Dr. Cheng has developed new synthetic methodologies for the efficient construction of pharmaceutical scaffolds. His broader research interests include rational drug design, structure–activity relationship analysis, and the development of novel therapeutic agents aimed at improving cancer treatment and overall human health.
